Update from the CDC on How Long People with Influenza-like illness should stay away from others.  As of August 5, 2009 the CDC recommends those with influenza-like illness stay away from others for 24 hours after their fever has resolved without the use of fever-reducing medication and regardless if anti-viral medication has been used. A fever is defined as 100 degrees F or 37.8 degrees C or greater. Previous recommendations were to stay away from others 7 days after the onset of illness or 24 hours after resolution of symptoms. These guidelines do not apply to those working in a healthcare setting but to schools, camps, businesses and community setting where the majority of people are not at increased risk of influenza complications.
