Rosacea is a common condition that primarily affects fair skinned individuals of northwestern European descent and has been nicknamed the ‘”curse of the Celts”. Rosacea can also affect people of other ethnicities.
Rosacea usually begins as erythema (flushing and redness) on the central face and across the cheeks, nose, or forehead but can also affect the neck, chest, ears, and scalp. Flushing and redness are frequently triggered by alcohol, hot beverages, spicy food, excessive heat and certain skincare and hair products. Some may experience an itching or burning sensation along with the flushing.
If untreated, roscaea can progress and cause a more persistent redness. The appearance of visible telangiectasias (dilation of superficial blood vessels), red domed papules (small bumps) and pustules can also appear. Rhinophyma, an enlargement of the nose and scarring can occur in much less common forms of rosacea
Treatments for Rosacea
There are many topical treatments that can help to lessen the redness of rosacea. Lasers and lights (internal link) can successfully treat the redness and visible facial vessels. Antibiotics are also commonly used to treat the associated acne that can occur with rosacea. Avoidance of triggers and direct sun exposure are also recommended to slow the progression of rosacea. Schedule a consult with Dr. Terry to discuss what treatments are right for you.
